Endodontics Overview

We understand the significance of a pain-free, healthy smile. If you’re experiencing tooth pain, sensitivity, or discomfort, you’re not alone. Many of our patients come to us seeking relief from dental issues that affect their daily lives. Dr. Elham Shadmehr is here to provide the specialized care you need to restore comfort and confidence in your smile.

What is Endodontics?

Endodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry focused on diagnosing and treating issues related to the dental pulp (nerve) and surrounding tissues. Commonly known as root canal therapy, endodontic treatment aims to save teeth that are infected, inflamed, or injured due to decay, trauma, or other factors. Rather than extracting the tooth, endodontic therapy removes the damaged pulp, cleanses the root canal system, and seals it to prevent further infection.

Our Endodontic Services

Root Canal Therapy

Our skilled endodontist, Dr. Shadmehr, utilizes state-of-the-art techniques and equipment to perform root canal therapy with precision and efficiency. Whether you’re experiencing tooth pain, sensitivity, or swelling, our team will diagnose the cause of your symptoms and develop a personalized treatment plan to alleviate discomfort and restore your oral health.

Root Canal Retreatment

In some cases, a previously treated tooth may become re-infected or fail to heal properly. Dr. Shadmehr is experienced in performing root canal retreatment to address these issues and save your tooth from extraction. With expert care and attention to detail, we will remove the existing filling, clean the root canal system, and effectively seal it to promote healing and prevent future infections.

Apicoectomy

An apicoectomy, or root-end resection, is a surgical procedure performed when the infection persists or develops after root canal treatment. During this procedure, the tip of the tooth’s root is removed, along with any infected tissue, to eliminate the source of infection and promote healing. Dr. Shadmehr has the skills and expertise to perform apicoectomies with minimal discomfort and optimal outcomes.

Dental Trauma Management

Traumatic dental injuries, such as fractures, dislodgements, or avulsions, can significantly impact oral health and function. Our endodontic specialist is trained to effectively manage dental trauma and provide prompt intervention to save injured teeth. Whether repositioning a displaced tooth or performing root canal therapy following trauma, we’re dedicated to restoring your smile and confidence.

What to Expect When Getting a Root Canal?

Undergoing a root canal may seem intimidating, but understanding the process can alleviate concerns and prepare you for a smooth experience. Here’s what to expect when getting a root canal:

  1. Initial Consultation: Your journey begins with an initial consultation with Dr. Shadmehr. During this appointment, Dr. Shadmehr will review your dental history, discuss your symptoms, and perform a thorough examination, which may include X-rays, to assess the condition of the affected tooth.
  2. Treatment Planning: Dr. Shadmher will develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique needs based on the examination findings. She will explain the recommended procedure, answer any questions, and address concerns to ensure you feel comfortable and informed.
  3. Anesthesia Administration: Before the root canal procedure begins, local anesthesia will be administered to numb the affected tooth and surrounding area. This step ensures that you remain comfortable and pain-free throughout the treatment.
  4. Tooth Preparation: Once the anesthesia has taken effect, the affected tooth will be isolated using a dental dam, a small sheet of rubber that keeps the tooth dry and clean during the procedure. A small access opening in the top of the tooth will then be created to reach the infected or damaged pulp chamber.
  5. Pulp Removal: The infected or damaged dental pulp from the root canal system will carefully be removed using specialized instruments. This process may involve cleaning and shaping the inside of the tooth to remove any debris and bacteria, ensuring the root canal is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
  6. Canal Filling: Once the root canal is cleaned and disinfected, it will be filled with a biocompatible gutta-percha material to seal the space and prevent recontamination. Sometimes, a temporary filling to protect the tooth until a permanent restoration, such as a crown, can be placed.
  7. Restoration: After the root canal procedure is completed, options for restoring the tooth’s function and appearance will be discussed. In many cases, a crown will be recommended that aids in strengthening and protecting the tooth from further damage. Dr. Shadmehr will refer you back to your general dentist who will help determine the best restoration for the affected tooth.
  8. Post-Procedure Care: Following the root canal procedure, you may experience mild discomfort or sensitivity, which you can typically manage with over-the-counter pain medications. Following any post-procedure instructions is essential, including maintaining good oral hygiene and attending follow-up appointments as recommended.
  9. Long-Term Success: With proper care and maintenance, a tooth that has undergone a root canal can last a lifetime. Be sure to schedule regular dental check-ups and cleanings to monitor the health of your restored tooth and prevent future dental issues.
